Monticello’s Environmental Initiatives: A Community Commitment to Sustainability

Monticello is actively enhancing its environmental sustainability through key projects that promise to benefit the community for years to come.

New Water Treatment Plant

In May 2023, the City of Monticello secured $11 million from the State of Minnesota to construct a new water treatment facility. This initiative aims to address elevated manganese levels in the municipal water supply, ensuring residents have access to safe and reliable drinking water. The facility will be located on Chelsea Road, utilizing existing city-owned infrastructure. While the total project cost is estimated between $40-50 million, the state funding significantly reduces the financial burden on the community. The project timeline includes preliminary planning and funding in 2023, facility design in 2024, and construction from 2026 to 2028.

Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant License Extension

The Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant has received federal approval to extend its operating license by 20 years, allowing it to function through 2050. This extension supports the transition to 100% carbon-free electricity, aligning with Minnesota’s clean energy goals. The plant has been a reliable source of carbon-free energy, powering over 500,000 homes annually in the Upper Midwest.

Community Engagement and Future Outlook

These initiatives reflect Monticello’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development. The city continues to engage with residents to ensure these projects meet community needs and contribute to a healthier environment. As Monticello progresses with these plans, the community can look forward to improved water quality and a continued supply of clean energy.
